BANK OF AMERICA LOSES SENSITIVE DATA

Bank of America has confirmed that it lost computer data tapes containing sensitive information such as names, Social Security Numbers, and account information on approximately 1.2 million federal employees, placing them at increased risk for identity theft. Employees who may be at risk are those who use charge cards issued by Bank of America for travel related expenses.

Identity theft occurs when someone users your name, Social Security number, date of birth, or other identifying information, without authority, to commit fraud. For example, someone may have committed identity theft by using your personal information to open a credit card account or get a loan in your name. For general information about identity theft, visit www.consumer.gov/idtheft or write to: FTC, Consumer Response Center, Room 130-B, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C., 20580.

Bank of America states the tapes went missing while being shipped to a backup data center. Because no unusual activity has been observed on the accounts so far, the company says it believes the data was lost, not stolen. The matter has been reported to federal law enforcement authorities, who are conducting an investigation.

Employees whose data was contained on the missing tapes will be notified by letter by Bank of America. The company has also set up a toll-free number (1-800-493-8444) for those who have questions or concerns. It added that government cardholders will not be held liable for any unauthorized use of their cards. While there have been no reports so far of the missing data being misused, affected federal employees are being urged to keep a close watch on their accounts and credit reports.

Bank of America, in conjunction with TransUnion Credit Reporting, has established a Fraud Alert and Disclosure Request Line. You may call 1-800-526-9104 to request a free copy of your credit report. When asked for a reference number, please state 9870. You may also add a fraud alert to your credit information. By adding a fraud alert, you would be notified for your approval before any information is released. TransUnion will also share this request for a fraud alert with other major credit reporting companies such as Equifax and Experian.

I'd really like to see something serious come out of this, but I'm biased. I don't like the fact that all that information is out there in the first place (but I'm a John Birch type, when it comes to that, I'd even like to get rid of the Social Security Number).
