Note that this is already an essential addition to my next house. I want three things out of our next house - at least one room with really nice built-in bookcases, and one wall of that room with sliding manga bookcases; no vinyl siding at all - all stone, or all brick, with possibly some wood as well; and at least one secret passage. Erik concurrs.
He wants a secret room like the one he saw in one of his police training courses - in the basement, a cinderblock wall is moved by hydraulics, with a hidden room behind. In the back of the hidden room is an escape tunnel that leads to a ladder and escape hatch hidden under an artificial rock some distance from the house.
Me? That's predictable enough. ^_^ I want the type where you push a book on the shelf in aforementioned library, and one of those built-in bookcases swings open, similar to what's shown in Animation 9 and the bookcase video above. And it's not like I have a shortage of nifty looking leatherbound books!
The escape chair in #4 makes me absurdly happy. I also like the whole tip-the-candlestick thing, so maybe I need a moving fireplace secret room, too.
Honestly, they won't be all that expensive to build - adding on a room while you're building is going to add to the cost, but not a huge amount. For the basement room, it just means making the basement a bit bigger, and then covering that bit over with sod when you're done. The boring for the escape tunnel will be pricy, and the actual door mechanisms aren't going to be a trivial cost, but...compared to what we're going to be spending to build the damn thing (like, say, the stone/brick)...yea, it's doable.
Of course, we're still 5-10 years from that point, but such is life.
