Merry Inoffensive Non-Denominational Winter Holiday to all, folks. Enjoy!
I got a clean car for Christmas, thanks to the pouring rain. And damn was it needed - the past two weeks of getting to work when it was still dark and leaving work after dark, with an hour+ drive made doing things like getting car washes a rather low priority.
Erik is thrilled with his stack of graphic novels and Conan books. I...have no Christmas presents from him as of yet, which left him wracked with guilt. I had to order my own iPod, because he couldn't find one anywhere (suprise suprise, when you start looking on December 22), and the Complete Calvin and Hobbes went missing somewhere in Philly three weeks ago and hasn't turned up yet. We'll be spending tonight at my Crazy Mother-in-Law's house, and tomorrow...at my Crazy Mother-in-Law's house. Yay!
In the meantime, I've started in on Jaqueline Carey's The Sundering duology. It's rather an odd book thus far, and I'm feeling far more sympathy for the supposed dark-and-evil sorts than the good guys. The good guys are assholes. Take this little gem: ( Spoilers, I suppose, but it's all covered in the first thirty-five pages )
If I'm supposed to be rooting for the good guys here, there's something badly wrong. Still, it's not bad thus far, and I'm interested in seeing how things play out. Some Amazon reviewers compared this to The Belgariad, but it's...not, other than superficially. For one, some of Carey's characters are both multidimensional and sympathetic, rather than flat, reused cookie cutters. Bleh. We hates the Eddings books, we do. Comparisons to Tolkien are more on target, but this is still sufficiently different that I don't feel like I'm reading something I've already read before. [EDIT] Also has a major character named Dani, which is rather bizzare to read.[/EDIT]
I'll be bringing it along to Crazy Mother-in-Law's house. Does this make me a bad person? Or just terrified that I'll have to hold up my end in another "cropping a dog's ears is just like breast implants!" discussion? *STAB*
Heh, uh, yea - I think I'll go have me some leftovers of the wonderful, wonderful stew I made last night. Rather light on the veggies - Erik decided he wanted three times the normal amount of meat in it, and my crock pot isn't overly large. We had my last bottle of Sharp Rock 2004 Chamois Rouge, which was both wonderful and unexpectedly carbonated. Very strange. Still, a wonderful wine, I need to make another trip out there to pick up some more soon.
