Feeling moderately less bitterness towards the world in general today - yesterday, right as I was leaving, Boss Man called me in to discuss Happy Bonus Time, which I wasn't expecting to be all that happy this year. Suprisingly, it was. Three things came out of that meeting:
-They're not paying me enough for the amount of work I do. There are all kinds of happy magic formulas that get plugged into a program to determine this. Last year, they told me they were paying me too much. This year, they're not paying me enough. This probably has something to do with the fact that they were evaluating me until recently with the same criteria they'd use for someone with 5-10 times my experience (like, *sniirk* Fu-Master). Rock on!
-They can't pay me as much as the Happy Magic Formulas say they should. The budget for this FY, frankly, sucks so bad I'm Really, Really Happy I don't have anything to do with it. One of my projects is bringing in money! However, they can give me a small raise, about 2%. So that's 2% less bitterness towards work.
-They're Really, Really Happy with some of the specific work I did last year - even though this is the first positive thing I've heard from quite a few people about it. The only feedback I had recieved is "you could have handled that better," without any indication as to what, exactly, I could have done to handle it better when all evidence pointed to the fact that I handled it ('it' being the NMCI rollout) better than 95% of the rest of the base. So they're giving me a bonus as well, of about 1.5% of my salary. Not huge, but substantial enough that I get to spend some of it on Something Fun. Not sure what that something fun is.
Actually, I'm feeling disgustingly perky right now, which I'm sure won't last. Probably because I went to bed an hour early, and slept in two hours late. Whoops. Then blasted Blackthorn on my drive to work and picked up some Chai from El Double Wa.
Things I might possibly spend Happy Bonus on:
-Boots of Awesomeness. Barring any unforseen circumstances, I'm putting away at least half of my boot cost out of the bonus. Possibly the whole thing, but at least half. It's Hiking Season, dammit, I'm five miles from a state park, and my damn ankle is still making things tough without the added support.
-Erik's transmission. Bleh. I don't want to do this, but I may have to. Bleh.
-Stocking up on DVDs at either the next DDD 20% off sale or a TRSI studio sale. Tempting. I might put aside a fraction for this purpose - there are a few series I want to finish off, and some box sets I want to pick up (Carnivale!)
-A 4-5 day mini vacation with Erik somewhere off Skyline Drive. Bed and breakfast (Erik wants to camp, I want showers at least every other day), hiking, winery tours...this is tempting. Erik's being stubborn about it.
-Extra principle payment on the house. The Really Responsible thing to do. Also boring. Certainly a possibility - less boring than a transmission.
Damn - all this energy, and nothing to do with it but sit at my desk and type. Bleh! I'll be inflicting the Mars Daybreak OST on a few people once they get back from meetings, though. ^_^
[EDIT] In case anyone hasn't seen them, the Boots of Awesomeness are going to be a combination of these, and the third boot on the page here.
