Early this morning, no later than about 3-4AM (I don't know for sure because the power went out a few times, and I couldn't be bothered to reset the clock), I'm woken from a dead sleep by an all too familiar noise - the sound of a mouse chewing and scratching on something. Ugh. In our bathroom.

I stalk in, look around, can't find the little bugger. Obsceneties may have been shouted. He shuts up, though, so I go back to bed. I just started falling back asleep when it starts up again. Time to call in the big guns.

I open the bedroom door which causes the cat, as usual, to leap into a flurry of insane cat behavior. I picked her up, took off her collar, and set her loose in the bedroom. Gracie, of course, wants to be lavished with attention - until the noise starts up again. She made it to the bathroom in about half a second, but the noise didn't stop. Erik finally got up (he slept through the obscenity shouting, somehow), turned the light on, and found the cat intently staring at the bathtub.

It's a very nice bathtub - one of the nicest things about the house. Very large, very deep, in a paneled platform in one corner of the huge bathroom. Apparently one of those panels comes off, and there's a tiny crack in one corner - large enough to let, say, a skinny yet determined king snake through (or giant creepy spiders), but not large enough for a mouse to get through - hence the noise. Erik suspects that there's a second snake in there, which is why the mouse was so frantic to get out. I'm not convinced, but I'm going to let him perform his experiment.

He wants to take the cat into the bathroom, block off the doors, and take the panel off to let the cat deal with whatever's in there. Should be interesting.

Bah, can't sleep, need to drive to Maryland tomorrow to have fun and dress in funny clothes.
