Today was interesting - rode up with Erik to visit with his grandparents, and had lunch with the rest of the family. We "talked" about the evil house, which mainly consisted of them telling me things I already knew about, and not really telling us anything of value. Nice.
I drove Erik to work, so I have to go pick him up again in a few hours. I guess one of his squadmates brought his cooler in, which means that he can't, for some reason, get a ride back home. I don't understand, either, but at least driving around in Prince William is easier at night than it is during the day on Memorial Day Weekend. I tried to nap, and that didn't work. I tried sleeping, too, but that didn't work, either. At least I only have to drive one way...
Ah well. In the meantime I've been watching The Melody of Oblivion and Gantz. Melody of Oblivion is pretty good thus far - someone described it as being "as strange as Utena in just three episodes," and I can't really argue with that assessment. Good stuff. Very odd. I want more.
Gantz is just warped. Badly. "Check your sanity at the door" type warped. Think Battle Royale with aliens, and you're almost there. It's...disturbing. Very disturbing. Psychological, suspenseful, violent (apparently, this lacks much of the violence that will be in the DVD version, though. That disturbs me, too), and ... I don't know what else. Compelling, certainly, but it's likely to give me nightmares. (If you watch it, watch at least the first two episodes. The first one didn't hook me, especially at first, but once the story kicks in it's something else).
I also finished PLANETES earlier this weekend. I held off watching it for quite a while, because I wasn't sure that it could live up to the manga, and I didn't know how they'd handle the ending, since the manga still hasn't ended. Well...it lived up to the promise of the manga and more.
It starts out as a mostly-lighthearted examination of the realities of life in space. "Realistic" is really the best word for it - it gets things right, which seems like it's too much to expect from science fiction anymore. It evolves from this light tone to something more serious, dealing with interpersonal politics, interplanetary politics, terrorism, psychological trauma, and even romance as well, and it does it all well. Very well. An all-around compelling series, highly recommended. I want it on DVD. Bandai, are you listening?
Tomorrow is a holiday, Boss-man and Fu-master are both off on Tuesday, only Fu-master is working on Wednesday, then I get Thursday and Friday off for the wedding. Yay! I need more two-day weeks, really.
