The security of my classified fiber system has apparently been breached. A cat has somehow managed to get into the fiber conduits and followed them all the way into our building. Into our secure comms closet. Where my boss is apparently trying to lure said cat out with sardines.

Not what I expected to have to deal with when I came in to work this morning...

Today...was just cool, and I'm not entirely sure why. I was incredibly productive at work, and what was supposed to be a throwaway half-hour meeting with some Network Associates sales reps turned out to be exactly what I was looking for to solve a rather substantial problem I have, handed to me on a silver platter. Well...maybe not exactly, because it doesn't support FDDI, but in this day and time, what does?

I have to seriously get to work on my proposal next week, get it as informative, pretty, and thorough as I can, pass it through Fu-master and Bossman, and try to get on the Facility Manager's (God, although not technically one of my bosses) schedule so I can get his blessing to go ahead with this. If I get his blessing we need to buy a set of proprietary hard drives and get a loaner unit from Network Associates, flesh out the engineering of this thing, and actually deploy it on one of the tactical networks. Should be fun. It's the most...intimidating project I've worked on, because it's so big and has the potential to be very, very nasty if it blows up in my face.

On the other hand, it has the potential to make me look very, very good if it works out. Very good. Especially given the capabilities that this unit has - our users are going to fall in love with it once they get a chance to test it out. The only drawbacks it has is that it doesn't capture in a libpcap format, only a proprietary one, but one of the user groups has a software utility to convert the format, so I'll need to get in touch with them to see how it works.

This system is going to cost a couple hundred grand across all the labs, and it'll only cover the ethernet LANs, but still...this is exciting. This whole project is essentially new territory for the facility, and it's mine, all mine!!! Muahahahahaha!!!

Other good things happened at work involving me rocking! and being a general genius but I've babbled enough, I think. Today made up for a whole lot of shitty weeks at work. Now, I'm going to enjoy the lovely warm rain.

Today has been an all-around fantastic day. I'm not sure why, but everything has just worked out my way.

I even won a Greg Ayers signed "Sister Princess" DVD from the cast guessing game. Now, Sister Princess is one of the creepiest shows ever, but it's still neat to win free anything, since I don't tend to, y'know, win stuff. Yay!
